FNG (short for "freeze next generation"[1][2] or "freeze and grab"[3]) is a Teeworlds player-versus-player mode combining movement and aiming. It is generally played in teams with either Laser and Hammer or Grenade Launcher. The current implementation is called fng2, developed by Jupeyy. The original 'Freeze' was released on 28 February 2009.
Gameplay
Laser
Laser FNG is usually played in teams where players are divided into red and blue teams and come with two weapons - laser and hammer. With the Laser you can freeze opponents (usually lasts for 10 seconds) and with the hammer you can unfreeze team mates, or hit the opponents into the spikes. During these 10 seconds, you can gain points by throwing the frozen tee into spikes. Depending on the kind of spikes you gain or lose points. You gain points when you throw the enemy tee in your team's spikes and lose points you throw it in the opponent's spikes. There are also harder to access spikes that reward a player with more points when he throws an adversary into them.
The solo variant is solofng2. All other gameplay is the same as in Team Mode, except where players fight alone against all players. But because there are no teams, you will not lose points.
The normal Teeworlds physics apply mostly, but the hammer is slightly different from the default hammer.
Throws are easier on enemies. However, hammmer blows don't propel teammates, making it easier to unfreeze them (each hit reduces the remaining freeze time by 4 seconds).
Grenade Launcher
Another variant to the FNG laser mode is the Grenade Launcher mode.
This mode is played solo. In this mode, players can kill enemies with Grenades, changing color with their number of kills. The killed tees spectate their killer until their are released or the killer is killed himself.
History
The current implementation is called fng2, developed by Jupeyy. There are several predecessors to this implementation. One being openFNG for Teeworlds 0.6 by fstd[4][5], maintained from 2011-2015. The solo variant was called soloFNG. The FNG gameplay is an advancement of the Freeze mod[6] fixing the long freeze times of players just laying around making it a bit boring.
